# What is a game engine and what is it for?

> A game engine is the program where a game is put together. It comes with what every game needs already built, such as drawing the screen, simulating physics, playing sound and reading the player's controls. The best known are Unity, Unreal and Godot. With AI, the engine is still useful: the AI writes the code, and the engine is where that code runs.

Summary for when you're short on time

- A game engine is the program where a game is put together.
- It comes with screen drawing, physics, sound and control input already built, so each game doesn't start from scratch.
- The term appeared in the mid-1990s, with games like Doom and Quake.
- Unity is used in games like Pokémon Go and Cuphead; Unreal, from Epic Games, in Fortnite and PUBG.
- Godot is free and open source, and it does not include AI features nor plan to, according to a longtime member of the project.
- For browser games, there are lighter options, such as Phaser, which is free, for 2D games.

Your first step: Open the Godot website and look at the images of games made with it. It is a way to understand, without installing anything, what a game engine produces.

## What is a game engine?

A game engine is the program where a game is put together. It comes with what almost every game needs already built: drawing the screen, simulating physics (the jump, the fall, the collision), playing sound and reading the player's controls[1].

Without an engine, each game would have to rebuild those parts from scratch. With one, whoever makes the game focuses on what belongs only to that game: the levels, the characters, the rules.

The term appeared in the mid-1990s, with 3D shooters like Doom and Quake, from id Software. The company licensed the core part of the program, and other studios built their own settings, art and levels on top of it[1].

## What are the best-known game engines?

Three names come up the most, and there are lighter options for browser games.

| Engine | What it is | Examples and source |
|---|---|---|
| Unity | From Unity Technologies, launched in 2005; makes 2D and 3D games for more than 25 platforms, from phones to consoles | Pokémon Go and Cuphead[2] [3] |
| Unreal Engine | From Epic Games; known for realistic 3D visuals, also used for sets in TV series | Fortnite, PUBG and the series The Mandalorian[4] |
| Godot | A free, open-source program for 2D and 3D games that takes the game to computers, phones and browsers | Official website[5] |
| Phaser | A free, open-source library for 2D games that run in the browser, on computers and on phones | Official repository[6] |

Phaser is simpler than the others: it has no screen for assembling the game, and everything is done in code, which suits having AI write that code (our take).

## With AI, do you still need a game engine?

In most cases, yes, and it is still useful. The AI writes the code and creates art and sound; the engine is where all of that becomes a game that runs and can go to a store.

The engine doesn't need AI built in. Rémi Verschelde, who has worked on Godot for almost ten years, said in June 2026 that the program does not include AI features and has no plans to[7]. Even so, an AI that works in the game folder can write the code that Godot runs.

**The other side.** Picking the wrong engine costs time, because switching engines midway almost always means redoing the game. A heavy 3D engine, like Unreal, needs a more powerful computer. And each engine's terms of use and pricing change over time: read the rules on each one's website before starting a big project.

## Where does the game engine come in when you make a game with AI?

It is where you open the project and play each version. ## Related questions

### What does "engine" mean in game development?

It is short for game engine: the program where the game is put together, which comes with screen drawing, physics, sound and player controls already built.

### What is the best game engine for beginners?

It depends on the game. For 2D, and for people who want a free, lightweight program, Godot is a common choice. Unity has a lot of learning material. Unreal is strong in 3D with realistic visuals, and it is heavier.

### With AI, do I still need a game engine?

In most cases, it helps to have one. The AI writes the code, and the engine is where that code becomes a game that runs on a computer, a phone or in the browser.

### Do game engines cost money?

There are free options. Godot is free and open source, and so is Phaser. Unity says you can start for free. The terms of each one change over time and are listed on each company's website.

### Can you make a game without an engine?

Yes. Browser games can be written directly in web code, or with a simpler library, such as Phaser. For a bigger game, an engine saves work.
